Missed dinner and impromptu date [May. 14th, 2007|12:57 am]

Well, today confirmed my opinion that 'if you want to get somewhere, don't rely on others to get you there'.
My brother-in-law invited us to a Mother's Day dinner at a very nice restaurant in Central Park. Reservations were for 5pm. So hubby and I drove 2 hours from Pennsylvania to NYC, braved the craziness of the Lincoln tunnel and the Sunday traffic of Manhattan to make it to his grandmother's apartment with time to spare and wait for Danny (brother-in-law) and his girlfriend to pick us up from there.
At 4.50pm, no Danny, no call, and he didn't answer his cell. So we decided to make our own way to the restaurant. Walked a few blocks to Broadway to pick up a cab, stood around for at least 10 minutes and not one free taxi to be had! Walked some more until we got to the corner of Central Park. Problem was, the restaurant was on the other end of the park, and by then it was already almost 5.30pm. Still no word from bro-in-law. By then I was pretty sure that our table had most likely already been given away, since on a crazy busy day like Mother's Day, they wouldn't hold the table for longer than half an hour.
Hubby was mad by that time, called his brother and left him a voicemail just to forget about the whole thing.
We were both starving by that time, though, so - since it was a beautifully warm day and we were already at Central Park, we just got us some street vendor food, took it into the park and had an impromptu picnic.
And it was nice! Just hubby and me, no kids, no one else around. We just talked and ended up having a good time, almost like a back in the days when we were dating.
Found out later, when we were already on the way back to PA, that Danny had gotten to grandma's house at around 5.30pm, looking for us, but by then Alex had turned off his cell phone 'cause he didn't feel like dealing with his brother, so we never knew whether he ever even tried to get in touch with us.
Oh well, Alex is still mad at Danny, but they'll work it out eventually. * I * actually had a nice time.
But now I'm beat. Going to bed now.

What a way to spend Mother's Day! But I'm glad it turned out sort of good anyway.

And I messed up by not saying this yesterday, but Happy Mother's Day!

Aw, thank you. And Happy (belated) Mother's Day to you, too - since you've got six furry kids at home ;)
Yeah, I actually didn't even mind it so much anymore after a while that we didn't make it to the restaurant, because it was nice just spending some quality 'alone' time with hubby. Not to mention that we probably saved a bundle by having sausage sandwiches and french fries in the park as opposed to a three-course dinner at a lakeside restaurant *grin*

Happy Mother's Day! I forget that some of the people I know are mums... heh...

That sounds way more sweet and romantic than what was actually planned! Too bad hubby's bro couldn't manage to be on time, but that really sounds like heaps fun! Glad you made a good time out of a potential bad one! :)

Thanks, sweetie. Yeah, six more weeks to go until I'll be a mom again. And by now the belly's in the way all the time! Just that little bit of walking in the city yesterday made my feet feel like I've been on a uphill hike. But that's ok - I love cruising around New York, belly and all.

The belly makes you want to charge rent, don't it? That's cool though, only 6 weeks left. Party?
