Can life suck any more? [May. 31st, 2007|06:59 pm]

It's been almost 5 months now since we moved from Las Vegas to bumfuck Pennsylvania and it's turning out to be one of the worst moves we've ever made. The ONLY thing that has been positive so far is that my 6-year old son has more family time with his cousins. Other than that, everything has gone wrong so far, and the job search is the worst of all. Alex has been looking pretty much since we got here. Every day. In PA, NJ, and mostly New York City. He has a Bachelors Degree in Information Technology and numerous certificates, but obviously the market around here for any IT jobs is just simply not there or we are doing something seriously wrong, because he just can't find anything. He has applied for literally hundreds of positions by now and most of them don't even get back to him. He's trying jobplacement agencies, too, and doesn't hear from them either. He's got the education, but so many places want 3-5 years of experience, and he apparently doesn't have enough of that. Even entry-level positions want several years of experience. WTF? Isn't that contradictory to the meaning of 'entry level'?
He is so down right now I'm seriously getting worried about him. He's looking into any sort of shit-job around here now, just so he can bring in some money, but Jesus, he didn't work his ass off for 4 years getting this degree to end up doing some bullshit job...
And I have 3 weeks left until this baby is born...
I told him today that, if he gets in touch with some people back in Vegas who have told him back then that there might be a job for him, we'll move back. I'm at the point where I won't even mind.
I don't understand what are we doing wrong, damnit!

Sadly, I'm in a professional school right now and this is the same story I'm hearing over and over again--the ITers can't get a job in the US job market. They're getting beat out again and again by oversea's competition and an aging first gen failed .com boomers who are sucking up jobs faster than you can shake a stick at em.

Has your husband looked around libraries and school media centers perhaps? While the pay isn't very good, a lot of schools need media specialists since it is one area of education and people aren't going into (educators being primarily women and women being less focused on technology than their male counterparts). I'd also suggest looking into IT centers at community colleges. If desperation hits perhaps he could teach some computer classes.

But yeah there's nothing you two are doing wrong, cause my professors are telling me the same thing. Getting a job right now in IT sucks to high heaven.

Also...baby! I hadn't realized it was coming so fast!!! gah!

Yeah, we're up against tough odds here, and the pool of competitors for IT jobs around NY just got bigger with all the college kids who graduated in May from who-knows-how-many schools around here.
But the media center idea is a good one, thanks! :)
He's hanging in there, re-doing his resume and using the forced downtime to get a few more computer certifications. He just can't give up!
thanks for your support, sweetie. HUGS!!

Ouch, that's rough! Aaron's in the same boat right now, down here near DC. Only, he has over five years hardware experience with no degree (only his A+), so he doesn't qualify for most entry level positions, either. We're not sure what we're going to do, but I'm going to try being a temp just to keep money coming in.

I hope your luck improves! *hugs*

*Hugs back* Yeah, it's a vicious cycle; employers want more and more from potential employees these days - experience AND certifications. And if you don't have enough of either one, you get disregarded so fast, it's ridiculous. Alex is going to drop off his resumes at some temp agencies and jobplacement centers in NY on Monday. Hopefully that will lead to something.
Thanks for your good wishes :)

Oh sweetie, that totally sucks.

I agree with Kiki - try media libraires or schools - things like that. It's the same for IT jobs here otherwise I'd tell you to migrate to Australia!

And three weeks! I didn't realise it was that close! You'll have to send me your postal address, can't have a member of the family born without getting the obligitory furry toy tasmanian devil now can we...

cheer up sweetie, things will turn around, i promise...

Furry tasmanian devil, huh? Aw, you're so sweet!!! :)
I'll e-mail you! Hopefully I'll have a link to another Mith-chapter for you too, by then.
And Alex just has to hang in there. I do hope his luck will turn around soon. Maybe it's like my mom said and things are supposed to work out this way, so that he's around me to help out until baby is born. And of course at the birth, too.
Thanks for your encouragement, sweetie :)
