| USA |
[May. 18th, 2008|11:00 am] |

| (relatively) non-lethal bullets |
[May. 18th, 2008|04:07 pm] |
I've been playing with the idea of a cyperpunkesque wuxia sort of setting, and I came up with the concept of someone shooting non-lethal bullets to primarily hit pressure points, as opposed to kill. (Which, uh, is kind of ridiculous and not really plausible as far as laws of physics and logic and all that go, but the genre gives a little leeway for the illogical.)
I've mostly been thinking of using rubber ones, but there seem to be a significant amount of cases of those puncturing/causing serious injury/killing etc. I've looked up "rubber bullets" in Wikipedia and Google, along with "rubber bullets impact", "rubber bullets force", "rubber bullets injuries", "handguns rubber bullets" and "pistols rubber bullets". Also tried plastic.
All shooting would be done from a fair distance, through pistols or handguns. I do understand that using guns and bullets of any kind pretty much means there's a high chance of somebody being killed, but I'm looking for something that if used properly would only, for the most part, cause superficial damage. It's a futuristic setting, so even a material that couldn't be used in modern times but would be feasible in a few hundred years would be cool. Would anybody have any suggestions? Should I stick to rubber? |

| History of reckless endangerment law |
[May. 17th, 2008|09:21 pm] |
The setting in question is a Steampunk world based roughly on 1890s Europe and America, the heroes come from the Britain equivalent, but they are familiar with American laws. I am assuming that they won't see anything wrong with risks and behaviours we would consider outrageous, but even they would draw the line somewhere.
My questions are as follows:
When did the first reckless endangerment laws come about?
In what way, if any, did they differ from modern reckless endangerment laws?
Are there any other laws that could be used against someone who has placed another human being in very grave danger?
I have tried googling it but I couldn't find anything useful that way.
EDIT: Removed the example since it only confused the issue. |

| Cage fighting |
[May. 17th, 2008|10:59 pm] |
I'm trying to write about a cage fighter, but he's not a professional by any means, and wiki only seems to have information on the Ultimate Fighting Championship. This guy is trying to stay under the radar, so he won't be doing anything very highly regulated. I'm wondering- what are the basic rules? What kind of money can he expect?
Thanks!
I've googled "Cage fighting" and "Bare knuckle boxing", and wiki'd the same. |

| Million dollar idea |
[May. 17th, 2008|10:48 pm] |
I was having a conversation with widdledragon when an idea came up. Something that would tip the reality TV garbage onto its ear. Something that would make millions of dollars and something that I have to share with everyone. It's entertaining, amusing, and (I think) a step away from the trash that they've been churning out nearly a decade after the first episodes of Survivor began polluting our tv airwaves.
I'm talking about a revolutionary new show called What now?
The premise is simple: Take some rich, snobby, spoiled people who have had everything handed to them on a silver platter. Now... take away their money and set a camera crew on them.
I admit, it's just making a spectacle of people. No better than the shit that's out there and its taking advantage people when they're in a vulnerable situation, blowing things out of proportion to create tv drama, but... it's still a fun idea to think of. |

I was shocked the other day to realize it's been 14 months since I posted anything here. How sad is THAT?! But then I saw Jane's post today, and all my intentions about being good and waiting until my very last paper was finished flew right out the window. Oh, well! *g*

Notes: Jane, thanks for letting me write a kinda response to the incredible snippet you posted a bit ago.

| Deadlines and guidelines |
[May. 17th, 2008|10:39 pm] |
Time is going fast, so here's the plan from now until the McShep Match deadline on Sunday 15th June.
We're going to have three challenges that everyone can join in with to keep our teams motivated as the deadline approaches. Hey, it's more fun than just nagging them about the deadline!
Wednesday 21st – Wednesday 28th May Home vs. away picspam battle – get your favourite screenshots ready and waiting to support your favourite team.
Wednesday 28th May – Wednesday 4th June Silly poll time – feel free to make suggestions in the comments if you have a fun poll idea.
Wednesday 4th – Wednesday 11th June With less than a month to go until the start of S5 we'll be looking for your predictions – and don't worry, there will be chance for both the spoiled and the unspoiled to take part.
Deadlines
If you're participating in this fest, your deadline is Sunday 15th June. Please, we're begging you, take this as the actual deadline, and not the date where you start wondering if you can get an extension. In fact, we strongly recommend aiming to get your story in early to avoid those last minute disasters.
This is because not only do we need to post both stories for the same prompt on the same day, making extensions difficult to grant with this format, but also the posting schedule cannot be moved for any reason as it takes us from the day after the deadline right up to the start of S5.
Given the tight schedule we're on we cannot promise that any extensions will be given, although we will do what we can to help if you're having real problems. All extension requests must be accompanied by a partial draft of the story, no exceptions will be made to that.
This is the important bit: If we don't receive either a completed story, a draft with an extension request, or a notice of dropout on the deadline day we will start looking for a backup to take your place. Once a backup has been assigned to replace you they will take your place on the team, although you will still be welcome to have your story posted to the community at the end of the fest.
Also please note that it's a good idea to check that an attachment (whether completed or draft) is actually included before you send the mail.
If at any point you are sure you won't be able to complete your story for the fest please comment here or email us at mcshep_match@refugeeblues.com to let us know.
( Submission guidelines – please read before submitting your story )
Still have questions?
Please comment here or e-mail us at mcshep_match@refugeeblues.com. |
